It's time... Dun dun dun...
Yay, I read a book, so now I review a book. Fun times. Sarcasm liberally applied.Bad Girls Don't Die, by Katie Alender
One of my favorites for a long time, I remembered with nostalgia the sense of horror and fear at the shadows of my fridge when I first read it. Looking back now, older and such, I realize it's not actually that horrifying. So sorry if that's what you wanted. But out of a sense of loyalty to it and amazement at Alender's foreshadowing skills, here it is, on my blog. (We'll get to actual horror later on)
Once upon a time, Alexis was a normal high school rebel- a little stereotypical, to be honest. Skipping school, pink hair (rad), viscous pranks that somehow never got her suspended/expelled. I kind of admired her, in some way, the ability to just not care. Everyone could do with a dose of that probably.
But then strange things start occurring. Like how her sister "accidentally" broke Mimi Larids arm. And Kasey, the sis, slowly receding into her shell, scared of her own shadow. To be honest, there's not a lot of build up. It dives straight into the action, sweet and simple. A few chapters in, Alexis has already become suspicious, revealed part of the ghost's back story, and had a cute boy talk to her. He's fabulous. All soft curls and realness.
Kasey gets worse, becoming violent, with her blue eyes flashing green. It doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to figure out she's possessed. But any thoughts of this being a tame book (for the younger kids at least) vanish. Brake lines are cut, touches leave burn marks, telekinesis. The characters, setting, background, the simplest detail all weaves together in a beautiful tapestry of backstory and foreshadowing. And besides the cool characters, breaking stereotypes down bit by bit, and realistic ways of being contacted from the other side, it's my favorite part.
